Yukito carries on his dead mother's missions of searching for the "girl in the sky," and makes a living as a showman as he travels Japan. One day, he comes upon a small town and sleeps by the sea wall at night. The next morning, he passes out from a heat stroke. He wakes up in the local fisherman's guild, and is fed and taken care of before he sets out again. While eating one of the few rice balls he was given, he notices a girl named Misuzu Kamio close by him, eager to become his friend and intent on playing games with him. He finally gives in, and follows her home for the opportunity to eat. Misuzu persuades her aunt and foster mother Haruko to let Yukito stay, and she eventually agrees.
The following day, Yukito meets a girl called Kano Kirishima, another one called Minagi Tohno, and her friend Michiru. They are all friends who go to the same school.
