Angelic Layer

Misaki Suzuhara is a 7th grade girl who moves to Tokyo to live with her aunt. As she's leaving the train station, she catches a glimpse of a doll battle on a giant T.V screen outside. There she learns about the exciting game of Angelic Layer-where players (or Deus) battle custom dolls named Angels by controlling them through mental movements on a battle arena (or Layer). Misaki is instantly enthralled with Angelic Layer.
Shortly after, Misaki meets a strange man called Icchan who helps guide her through the process of buying, creating, and battling an Angel. She creates Hikaru, a small but powerful doll like one she saw battling on the T.V.
As Misaki becomes more and more involved in Angelic Layer, she picks up a few good friends, one of whom is also a Deus. Misaki's goal is to battle in a tournament and eventually battle the angel that inspired Hikaru. She also wants to find her mother, who mysteriously left one day when she was young and whom Misaki hasn't seen since.
