You are going to have So much fun!! If you are using public transit do book everything online and possibly consider getting a rail pass too because the train eats up your money at the ticket counter. Like bad. But plan ahead and get your tickets a few days before. I'm enforcing this because I didn't know and I wasted a lot of money that way. In Winter, the majority of the youth hostels close in Britain. And they leave a grand total of Three open in Wales. One in Cardiff, Brecon (very pretty) and Bangor.Top, middle, bottom. Somebodys idea of a joke. There's a place near wales in Eng, called Stow-in-the-Wold, the prettiest place on the trip and there is a nifty little walk you can take around the area. I don't know if it would even be soon at all, but the biggest problem is money, so that is why the questions. I will have to check out your picture though! Staying for free depends on if you can get a job working at the hostel. They are always in need of reception and cleaning staff. That gives you room and board, but obviously requires you to stay for awhile. With the membership you get a small discount, but it's money saved. If you are reallllly smart (and boy, do insist on this) always book online. And phone to make sure. It lets you know if there is room, because they will turn you away just like that even if you traveled across the channel and all through england to get there. But, more than that, it lets you check what sort of place you will be getting into, because there are some really nice ones and some really bad ones and what their locations are, especially if there are multiple ones in a city. So yeah, there's other hostels not with YHA, be careful with those. Some are nice, some are not. Hopefully I answered your questions^^
Oh yes^^ Youth Hostels are that in name only really. If you do want to stay cheaper though I fully and deeply reccomend you get a Youth Hostel Association or YHA membership. You get great discounts on a lot of things, even at home. Including bus and train tickets. I get 20% off on bus tickets here. Now, to be fair, YHA hostels are a little pissy with their rules, you can't bring in your own sleeping bags, and while it's really clean, it's kinda cold. But, there is generally a full breakfast for free (I admit that's what sustained me for awhile), always a clean bed and room with a bedbag thingy, full kitchen and a locker. And they have a lot of info on the area, suggestions for the day, and most are located in nice areas. On that note, stay the **** away from Milton Keynes!! It gives you the willies and the reception are not very intelligent or considerate. Just stay away.

Can you pretty much go into a hostel in Europe whether you're a student or not? Is it pretty easy to stay there for little to nothing?
